Adult ADHD Evaluation & Treatment
Thoughtful ADHD evaluation and medication management, based in Bellingham and available virtually throughout Washington State.
ADHD can look different in adulthood than many people expect. You may be successful at work or school while feeling like it takes an exhausting amount of effort to stay organized. You might procrastinate until something becomes urgent, lose track of conversations, forget appointments, struggle to finish projects, or find yourself able to focus intensely on something interesting while having difficulty starting something important.
Maybe you've wondered for years whether you have ADHD. Or maybe you've already been diagnosed, but you're not sure the diagnosis or treatment quite fits.
At Sprout Psychiatry, ADHD evaluation is about understanding the whole picture, not simply checking enough boxes on a questionnaire.
Could It Be ADHD?
Adults seek ADHD evaluations for many different reasons. Some have struggled with attention and organization since childhood. Others begin wondering about ADHD after the demands of college, a career, relationships, or parenthood make their usual ways of coping less effective.
You might recognize experiences such as:
Difficulty starting or finishing tasks
Chronic procrastination
Losing or forgetting things
Difficulty keeping track of appointments and responsibilities
Frequently becoming distracted
Feeling overwhelmed by ordinary organizational tasks
Restlessness or difficulty slowing down
Acting or speaking impulsively
Intense focus on interesting activities while struggling with less stimulating ones
Feeling as though everyday life requires more effort than it seems to require for other people
Experiencing some of these things doesn't necessarily mean you have ADHD. That's where a thoughtful evaluation becomes important.
ADHD Can Be Complicated
Difficulty concentrating isn't unique to ADHD.
Anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep problems, substance use, medications, medical conditions, and other psychiatric concerns can sometimes cause symptoms that resemble ADHD. It's also common for ADHD to occur alongside other mental health conditions.
A psychiatric evaluation should therefore answer a broader question than simply, "Do I have ADHD?"
We also want to understand what's contributing to the difficulties you're experiencing and what treatment is most likely to help.
At Sprout, diagnosis is approached with curiosity rather than a predetermined conclusion.
A Thoughtful Approach to ADHD Diagnosis
An ADHD evaluation includes a detailed conversation about your current concerns, psychiatric and medical history, relationships, functioning, and how your symptoms have developed over time.
We'll look for patterns across different parts of your life and consider other possible explanations for your symptoms.
Standardized screening tools and other information may also be used when helpful, but no questionnaire by itself determines your diagnosis.
The goal is to arrive at a diagnosis that makes sense in the context of you as a whole person.
Treating Adult ADHD
If ADHD is diagnosed, we'll develop a treatment plan together based on your symptoms, goals, preferences, health history, and everyday life.
Treatment may include medication, behavioral strategies, psychotherapy, sleep and lifestyle changes, or a combination of approaches.
Medication can be extremely helpful for some people with ADHD, but finding the right treatment sometimes takes time. Ongoing appointments allow us to evaluate what's helping, monitor side effects, and make thoughtful adjustments as needed.
Treatment isn't simply about becoming more productive. The goal is to help you function more comfortably and consistently in the parts of your life that matter to you.
What About Stimulant Medication?
Stimulant medications are among the most effective treatments available for ADHD and may be considered when they are clinically appropriate.
At the same time, scheduling an ADHD evaluation does not guarantee an ADHD diagnosis or prescription for a particular medication. Treatment recommendations are based on your individual evaluation, medical history, potential risks and benefits, and what we decide together makes the most sense for your care.
If medication is appropriate, we'll discuss your options openly so you understand both the potential benefits and risks.
ADHD Care That Goes Beyond Symptoms
At Sprout, ADHD treatment isn't separated from the rest of who you are.
Dr. Taylor takes a psychodynamic and relational approach to psychiatric care. In addition to attention, organization, and impulsivity, treatment can consider relationships, personality, recurring patterns, self-esteem, and the experiences that have shaped how you understand yourself.
For some adults, finally understanding ADHD can also mean reconsidering years of being told they were lazy, unmotivated, disorganized, or simply not trying hard enough.
A diagnosis can provide useful context. It doesn't have to define you.
